Prof. Jacek Mąkinia, Ph.D., D.Sc., Eng. has been professionally associated with Gdańsk University of Technology (Poland) since graduating in 1989. He obtained his Ph.D. from Portland State University (USA) in 1997. Since 2013, he has served as Head of the Department of Sanitary Engineering at Gdańsk University of Technology.

Professor Mąkinia is an IWA Fellow, former member of the IWA Strategic Council, and Chair of the Management Committee of the IWA Specialist Group on Nutrient Removal and Recovery. He has spent more than seven years at academic and research institutions abroad, mainly in the USA, Germany, and China. He has been a visiting professor at the University of Washington (Seattle, USA), Illinois Institute of Technology (Chicago, USA), and Tongji University (Shanghai, China). Jacek’s research focuses on advanced wastewater treatment systems, nutrient and energy recovery, greenhouse gas mitigation, and process modelling and optimization.
